Putting a baby to sleep, in the light or in the dark?
Premature Babies
1 in 10 babies born worldwide is premature.
A premature birth means a baby is born too early. Delivery occurs before the 37th week of pregnancy. A typical pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks.
Premature babies often have serious health problems, especially when they are born much earlier. These problems tend to vary. But the earlier a baby is born, the greater the risk of health problems.
A premature newborn may be:
Late preterm, if born between 34 and 36 weeks of gestation.
Moderately premature if born between 32 and 34 weeks of pregnancy.
Very premature, if born between the 28th and 32nd week of pregnancy.
Extremely premature if born before 28 weeks of pregnancy.
Most premature births are late.
